5 Minute Survey
I want to offer some deeply soulful classes for teachers this summer and during the upcoming school year. I have asked teachers what would support them both personally and professionally in a little 5 minute survey.
If you haven't answered it, please take just a couple minutes to let your voice be heard HERE.
In exchange for your input I will send you a one of a kind giant 4x6 sticker for your favorite notebook, file cabinet or any spot that can use some inspiration!
Thanks!

My First Grader Taught Me To Knit
There is so much power in learning from a child. I can't even count all the lessons I've learned from my son about slowing down, enjoying life, etc. But to learn a practical skill from a seven year old. . .
Sam attends a Waldorf school, and one of the subjects is Handwork. In first grade their eighth grade buddies teach them to knit.
So I ask him if he want to teach me to knit, and he explains that I need to make or buy knitting needles and yarn. I opted for buying them!
He was a patient teacher, and I was quickly hooked. I'm already looking up videos and he is explaining to me projects I could be making.
Why is this so good? It's amazing to see your own child as the "expert" and yourself as the "novice." It gives children confidence in their abilities. It makes us both more open to learning and trying new things.
What can you learn from your kids or students?

Thumbprint Art
When I was a kid I adored the book by Ed Emberley. This cover was the one I remember, but there are several new versions, too. Thumbprint art is fun and inexpensive. It doesn't require fancy materials or extensive set up or clean up.
Now I have a son who also enjoys thumbprint art! Here is work he recently created on his own.
How could we use this in the classroom?
- Illustrations for a writing narrative
- Reviewing characters in an animal story
- Creating a character to write about
- Illustrations for math number stories
- Art component for science unit on animals
Other possibilities include: greeting cards, indoor recess, free choice center, art or creative expression, and creative thinking.
Some tips:
- Have a moist paper towel close at hand
- Don't have colorful stamp pads? Use washable markers.
- Pintrest has many examples
- Have examples younger students can recreate and model the process, and then the rest can be independent
Happy thumbprint creating!

Sabbatical Year Recap: November - January
As you may know I have been on a sabbatical this year from the classroom. I am pursuing several of my passions: art, writing, yoga, and consulting with educators. I have found great joy in being a mom who gets to take her son to school. I am learning so much about myself and how I interact with the world around me.
Here is a recap of the past few months by specific passion:
ART
November started with me being chosen as one of ten local arts to participate in Reworks project, Make Art Not Waste. It was an intense 3 day project that ended with a show at Summit Art Space.
See that project HERE and HERE and HERE
I held my first ever Pop Up Sale at my studio in November
My Art made its way into the Wayne Center for the Arts gift shop in Wooster, Ohio
My Art adorns the walls at Sweet Mary's Bakery in Akron, Ohio
I participated in the Barberton Art Mart in December
I offered various workshops for families, children, and adults at the Art Center on Tusc {ACoT}
I continue to create acrylic paintings, paper and book arts--while preparing for upcoming shows and events. See some on my blog.
Four of my newer paintings art at Nine Muses Gallery from mid-January to February 21.
WRITING
I spent the month of November doing something I have wanted to do for the past several years. I participated in NaNoWriMo--National Novel Writing Month. The goal is to complete an entire 50,000 word first draft of a novel in just one month. I did it! It was an amazing experience to see the work morph and develop on its own. March will be my revise and edit month. I hope to have it in good enough shape to send off to several publishers later in the spring.
I have continued slowly on The Transformational Classroom, a manual for teachers on self care and classroom management. I have cleared the focus and divided it into 3 distinct sections with an introduction. I hope to send it to several publishers by the end of spring/start of summer. I have selected two publishers that I would love to have birth this work with me.
I continue to write here, at Brave Teachers, at Brave Art by Miriam Daniel, Brave Yoga and at various social media outlets.
YOGA
I continue to teach yoga every Saturday morning at Grace Loyal Oak UCC. See classes on Brave Yoga website.
I completed another round of Just 4 Girls Yoga in November and December. It is now open for grades 3 - 8 for February and March.
I continue to teach a Wednesday evening private class.
I shared yoga at another Norton District Girl Scout Event, Free to be Me. {I was even quoted in the Barberton Herald.}
I wrote and started to sell Yoga Story Scripts on Teachers Pay Teachers. I also created a video of poses to accompany the story scripts.
I offer concierge yoga services, and I am now working a marketing plan for summer camps and schools.
COACHING/CONSULTING
The week between Christmas and New Year I offered an email retreat for teachers, Restoration and Renewal. This was given as a gift to dozens of teachers. I have taken all of those materials and created an online home/classroom, The Restoration and Renewal Toolbox, that anyone can access anytime for a small fee.
In November I offered the workshop Creativity in the Common Core Classroom. I am compiling those materials and creating new materials so that it may evolve into an open online classroom.
I am letting Will U rest until I have the time to expand him into a full program of social and emotional development for children.
I have met with several school administrators and numerous teachers who encourage me to continue this holistic work for teachers and children everywhere.
I continue to hone my mission while expanding my reach.
WHAT AM I LEARNING AND OBSERVING?
This has been a powerful time of personal exploration and growth. Some days I feel like I'm evolving and light speed, and other days the movement feels painfully slow.
Here are a few of the lessons that pop to mind today:
- It is tough work to maintain motivation and focus without the framework of a traditional work day.
- Daily progress is essential, even when it is slower than anticipated.
- It takes brutal honesty to see that I fall back into old habits even when I have time to hone new habits.
- Failure and rejection are all part of the path to success.
- Writing down daily, weekly, monthly goals expand opportunities for success, even though it seems like they would limit options.
- If you don't ask the answer is already no.
- I LOVE having more time to be a mom and find a gentle rhythm for my quirky kid and his quirky mom!
- It might be smart to combine my passions under one big brave umbrella. {This is in the works!}
- There is a difference between being lonely and alone.
- It takes a HUGE amount of energy to create something new and fresh every single day.
- Feel the fear and do it anyway.
- Growth usually doesn't come to us--it's something that must be pursued.
- Rest is essential and a rebellious act in the nonstop go world.
This is such an amazing gift. It's hard and scary and beautiful all at once.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SUPPORT MY CREATIVE ENDEAVORS?
- I opened a Patreon site so that you can make a monthly contribution to the work I'm doing and get some sweet thank you gifts.
- You can also support me by buying something that I have made.

Sharing Interest for Valentine Celebration
Valentine celebrations are a great time to invite children to share their interests with classmates. It's a great way to personalize a holiday that becomes more and more homogenized. My son, Sam, is a total little science nerd. He also makes valentines for his classmates. We talked about a couple options, and I told him I thought this one would be really cool. He had to see a demonstration before he was convinced!
This year Sam and I are making Borax Crystal Hearts for each of his classmates. My greatest contribution is adding the boiling water to the borax powder and helping form hearts with the pipe cleaners.
HERE is a great site for specific directions and the science behind it.
What ways do you encourage your children or students to celebrate their individuality for Valentine's Day or other holidays?

Harry Potter Birthday Party
So this weekend sweet Sam turned 7. He is always interested in fairies and wizards and gnomes and magic, so when he first listened to Harry Potter on CD this summer he was hooked.
He gets to choose a theme for his birthday, with parent guidance, of course. We settled on Harry Potter, and then we proceeded to see how we could pull of something that felt magical for Sam and inexpensive for his parents.
Here is where we ended up:

More Yoga Story Scripts on Sale
Earlier this school year I started writing down the stories I tell as part of my kid yoga programs. I just put 5 {and a bonus one} of them together in a little PDF over at Brave Teachers Teachers Pay Teachers Shop. This is not a cutesy resource. It's a basic text document that gives you the exact words to read while you lead a group of children in a mindful calming practice. Yoga can improve, flexibility, strength, focus, body awareness, and self confidence, while reducing stress and anxiety, among other benefits. This set includes these Yoga Story Scripts: Walk in a Winter Wonderland, Walk in the Rainforest, On the Hunt for Pirates, Walk Along the Beach, and Relaxing Robot{Corpse Pose for Kids}. There is also a bonus script: Suggestions for Warm Up or Cool Down that can be used first thing in the morning, after recess, before a test, or at the end of the day.

Let Kindness Take Root
![]() |
| Section of a new painting: Kindness Takes Root 12 x 24, acrylic on canvas, $165 |
Today, in honor of Dr. King I am inviting you to give kindness roots in your classroom. This invitation is a tricky one, because by this time in the year you know all of the foibles of your students and your tolerance for shenanigans is very low.
As is the case with most valuable teaching, it all begins with the teacher--that's you! Tomorrow choose one area to bring kindness into the sacred space of learning that is your classroom. Greet students at the door with a smile and handshake. Empower your most challenge student to lead--this might just be passing out papers. Elevate a shy student by pointing out their work ethic or problem solving. Find something to compliment in the child who is most difficult to like.
Here is the secret: At first this may all be suspect. But you are allowing kindness to take root. It begins in your heart and over time it spreads and lives are impacted--especially your own!

Seeking Support and Making Magic
I am not good at asking for help. Even if I was drowning {literally or metaphorically} I'm not sure I would ask for help. My mom used to joke {I think it was a joke} that my first words were, "I'll do it my way."
I have lived long enough to know that even when we think we are doing it our way, there are miracles and magic surrounding us, thanks to amazing people who offer us support.
I want to spend the rest of this year as a full time artist and author. I make stuff every single day, and I put it out into the world to make it a better place. For this reason, I am asking for support via my Patreon site. I'm inviting you to make a monthly contribution, and I make cool stuff and share some of it with you.

Day of Inspiration and Action
It's that time of year. It's cold. It's dark. The holidays are over, and our to do lists are LOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGG. This makes it difficult to do two things:
1. Feel inspired
2. Take action.
"Just let me stay in bed and procrastinate a little longer," might be our first thought.
And from this place it is so easy to spiral down into guilt and shame--which is just an ugly pit that can be difficult to escape.
So today I am inviting you and me to take action--maybe even mini, micro actions. Let's take little steps together to get our inspiration back and our action on track.
Let's start with inspiration:
- Take a walk--even a quick one and look at trees. Here in Ohio there is a light blanket of snow that makes the trees look gorgeous. Breathe in the beauty of trees.
- Scroll down through this site or another site for inspiration. Set the timer for just 15 minutes. This is inspiration, not a time sucker.
- Choose to eat one meal that really nourishes you. It tastes good and it's good for you. Let this inspiration fuel you.
- Be an observer of inspiration--just seek it out today.
- Grab yourself a Brave Inspiration card deck
- Do a fun activity for just a few minutes or a few hours--you decide.
An now for action:
{When you have lots to do the getting started part can be the biggest obstacle, so let's get started!}
- Make a list of the 3 most important things for you to accomplish today. {I did NOT say 3 pages, just 3 things!}
- Take the first step in doing the first thing on your list.
- Solicit support for completing your list.
- Stay focused, even when there are interruptions or roadblocks--3 Most Important Tasks
- YOU HAVE THIS!
P.S. Tomorrow I'm going to ask you for some support. I hope you will be able to help me take action!

Advent Celebration and Gentle Rhythm
Are you just coming down from the hectic days around the holiday? Did Christmas feel like a let down after all the resources you invested for just a few hours of unwrapping and overeating?
I have felt that way for so many years. That is not what I want my son to think Christmas is all about. So this year we tried an experiment that we have deemed a success and plan to continue next year.
Before I tell you what it was, please know it was way less insane than many Christmas Days I've witnessed. We hosted an All Family Advent Celebration. We {the six year old boy and I} talked and roughly planned it in the Fall. {We both love to offer hospitality, but we don't do well with big expectations.} We sent out invitations in October so that people could mark their calendars. Here are the highlights:
- Each Sunday evening of Advent we had a simple meal at our house
- We made soup 3 weeks, and we made pizza the last week
- There was no pressure to attend, but all were welcome
- There was no pressure to bring food or eat the food we had prepared, but guests were invited to contribute
- He lit our advent wreath each week
- We had simple crafts, seasonal books to read, and Christmas music
The number of guests we had ranged from 2 - 18. The last week my son was super excited that his teacher joined us!
There was always enough food!
Sometimes it was really quiet, and sometimes it was really loud with kids playing and adults laughing.
Since it was new we could keep the expectations simple.
Our house got tidied once a week between Thanksgiving and Christmas. We got to offer hospitality. We got to make lovely memories with different combinations of family members. This added a lovely rhythm to the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
It would also work nicely with a close group of friends!
Now it's time to reflect: What worked well for you during the holiday season? What will you repeat? What will you delete?
Happy New Year!

Twenty years from now
| Sailboats Under A Tree $185 |
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
This quote is most often attributed to Mark Twain, but he didn't say it! We don't know who did, but it is really good.
What will you be disappointed you didn't do?
Go do it!

Seasonal art
Even if you can't find much time for art at least once a quarter make some seasonal art. Fall is a great time to start because pumpkins and gourds make wonderful still life. You can see some drawings that some kids started one year here.
I love art as a process so I would do several quick 15 minute sessions. Here is what I would do:
Plan to model each of these for one or two minutes.
1. Sketch the still life with pencil
2. Trace around the objects with crayons.
3. Add color with watercolor paints. {If you don't have paints, crayons or color pencils will work nicely. This would be a lovely way to teach kids to use several colors together, working lightest to darkest.}
Need a reason to justify season art? Write poetry or seasonal narratives, and display them together.

28 Uses for a Single Sheet Eight Page Booklet
I love having kids create their own learning. It takes much more time, but it's so worth it. One of my favorite little tools is a little booklet made from a single sheet of paper. These are probably too small for students under third grade, but from there on up the uses are limitless.
Here is a little video to show you how to make two different styles of the little book:
And I came up with 28 ways that popped into my head for using this book. I bet you can think of tons more. If anything comes to mind, please add it in the comments.
Here is a little video to show you how to make two different styles of the little book:
And I came up with 28 ways that popped into my head for using this book. I bet you can think of tons more. If anything comes to mind, please add it in the comments.
How many uses can you think of for a little 1 sheet eight page booklet?
- Record daily temperature or weather
- Answer a daily word problem/number story
- Write a story using spelling words
- Make a comic book using spelling words
- Write spelling words in different fancy fonts
- Use spelling words in sentences
- Word of the day--each booklet could contain 7 words with a “chapter” title page for the theme of those 7 words
- Create “How to” process books ie How to make chocolate chip cookies
- Use to record steps of scientific method for a science experiment or demonstration
- Record ways to make the number for that day of the school year. If it’s the 25th day, use 25 tally marks, a quarter, 5 x 5, 20 + 5, twenty-five, etc.
- Make a comic book or what you are studying in any subject
- Retell a story
- Make a timeline
- Make a little magazine collage on each page
- Use to show examples of a grammar concept--Write sentences and highlight all the nouns or all the adjectives
- Make lists of words that can be used instead of overused words
- Make a book on a topic of study for a younger student
- Record growth over time--i.e. from egg to butterfly
- Examples of good study habits
- Examples of kind behavior at recess
- Write a story on any topic
- Record favorite quotes
- Write a recipe
- Record definitions for vocabulary words
- Illustrate vocabulary words
- Make a multi-page card filled with good wishes (ie what you wish for mom on Mother’s Day)
- Use the booklet as a final assessment at the end of a science or social studies unit.
- Incorporate into science notebooking

I totally love story stones
![]() |
| Material: Sticker and gems or rocks |
| Two little sets: Woodland plants and animals and meadow life |
I totally love story stones! I think they are a great way to incorporate more creativity into the common core classroom.
You can go to pintrest of just search "story stones" to find many more beautiful and creative pieces than those that I have made! One blog post I particularly like is HERE.
I want for simple--down and dirty. I just use stickers on glass gems or rocks. My classroom students and kids yoga students have both enjoyed using them. They can be used whole class, in partnerships, at table teams, or as a learning center alone. They can be used to strengthen certain skills (ie. describing words or beginning/middle/end). They can be used for differentiation, too. They are fun, and so you know kids will like them.
With 4th graders it might be fun to try putting vocabulary or specific words on story rocks instead of pictures or stickers. If you try this, let me know how it works!
Supplies
a variety of small stickers
rocks or glass gems
modge podge + brush
box or bag for storage
1. Choose stickers that will work well for the size of rocks or gems you have. {Small round stickers are great on small glass gems.} Consider if you want some stickers that seem like they fit together for a particular topic--woodland animals and plants or all insects or jungle animals.
2. Add stickers to rocks
3. Modge podge over the tops of the stickers and allow them to sit out and dry overnight
4. Store story stones in a bag or box. {You might want to store each set in its own little pouch.}
What about the common core standards? Where does this fit in?
I'm just highlighting the anchor standards that apply to every grade:
Speaking/Listening:
Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
Writing: Text Type and Purpose:
Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.
Writing: Production and Distribution of Writing:
- Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience
- Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.
Have you used story stones? How?
Best wishes with bringing more beauty and creativity into your classroom. Let us know how it works!
