More Yoga Story Scripts on Sale

Earlier this school year I started writing down the stories I tell as part of my kid yoga programs.  I just put 5 {and a bonus one} of them together in a little PDF over at Brave Teachers Teachers Pay Teachers Shop.  This is not a cutesy resource.  It's a basic text document that gives you the exact words to read while you lead a group of children in a mindful calming practice.  I've also included a link to a goofy video I made if you need a little refresher in the basic breathing or postures of these routines.

Yoga Story Scripts:  Seasons, Nature, and Imagination, Volume 1, includes five unique original Yoga Story Scripts to give your students more exposure to a mindful yoga practice.  Yoga can improve, flexibility, strength, focus, body awareness, and self confidence, while reducing stress and anxiety, among other benefits.  This set includes these Yoga Story Scripts:  Walk in a Winter Wonderland,  Walk in the Rainforest, On the Hunt for Pirates, Walk Along the Beach, and Relaxing Robot{Corpse Pose for Kids}.  There is also a bonus script:  Suggestions for Warm Up or Cool Down that can be used first thing in the morning, after recess, before a test, or at the end of the day.

You can grab the whole bundle for $7.50 or for the next couple days at 20% off!  Check out the other scripts and lots of FREEBIES in the TpT shop.

Creativity and Energetic Offerings

I'm offering a variety of classes and workshops between now and winter break.  If you're local I'd be delighted to have you join us.

First I'm pleased to offer a new session of Just 4 Girls Yoga.  This is a wonderful chance for elementary age girls to gain body awareness, gain social and creative skills, and practice mindfulness in a fun environment of yoga breathing, stretching, stories, and games.  Each week has a different topic.  Some of this sessions include gratitude, generosity, and light.  This is where to register.
If you want to peak into our first session, HERE is where you can learn more.

I'm also pleased to offer yoga for everyone on Tuesday morning in Barberton and Saturday morning in Norton.  Learn more about those class times and locations HERE.

I have two pretty fantastic workshops coming up.

The first is Holiday Season Sanity Saver.  We will practice some yoga breathing and relaxing that you can use to refresh anytime, and then we will enjoy some tea, strategizing, and a little book for notes that I make for just you.  Get more details and register HERE

Then I'm super excited for a two evening workshop of Upcycled Decorations and gifts.  Some of our projects will include these:

Make a tree by folding a paperback book

Learn to make newspaper roses to create a wreath
I'm also planning for some felted wool decorations, magazine pages becoming stationary sets, and making gift tags and cards with recycled handmade paper.  Use your new found skills to continue creating more gifts and decorations on your own.  Details and sign up HERE

Treat yourself so that you can find more joy and less stress in the rest of this year!

Calm, Mindful Kids: Yoga Story Scripts

Yoga Story Scripts by Miriam Daniel

Who wouldn't want calmer, aware, flexible students?

I totally loved doing yoga with 30+ Girl Scouts yesterday evening.  Our evening focused around a story.  Most of my yoga for kids does.  I make up stories that take us through a series of poses.  The response is always fantastic when we do this.

Then I thought it might be great to share these with teachers.  Most of the stories take about 15 - 20 minutes if you move slowly through the breathing {The secret to success!}.  They would be great to wake kids up in the morning or calm kids down after recess.  The teacher tells a bit of the story and then guides the group into yoga poses.

Some of the benefits I have witnessed in using yoga with kids:

  • more body awareness
  • more focus
  • more emotional awareness
  • stronger listening skills
  • less stress, anxiety, and social issues
  • better flexibility (physically and emotionally)
I just put the first script, A Walk In The Meadow, up on my TpT store.  I think it's a great investment!

Yoga Just For Girls

I can't even tell you how much I wished I had learned the basics of yoga as a child.  Stuff like breathing to relax or calm down before a test.  Moving the body to quiet the mind.  {As a child I thought my brain ran nonstop--always curious and wondering and questioning.}

Even more I wish I had learned some body acceptance as a child.  I think the course of my adult life and relationships would have/could have been very different.  Those are thoughts for another day.

I am pleased to present Just 4 Girls, a creative yoga program that centers around stories, games, and art.  Each session has a different theme.  The first week is strength. Follow weeks include:  peace, beauty, kindness, spoken words, and gratitude.  These skills lead to lifelong healthy habits.  We will play fun simple games, practice poses within stories, and create a project to take home.

The program is geared for girls in grades 1 - 5.  Girls are asked to bring a yoga mat or beach towel and wear comfortable clothes.  The program runs on Mondays, 6 - 7 p.m., September 28 - November 2.  We will meet at the Art Center on Tusc.  {571 W. Tuscarawas Ave., Barberton OH  44203}  The six session investment is $50

Registration is open HERE

If you have questions or would like to bring this yoga to your community group or school, email me.

Yoga Breath with Kids in the Classroom

Have you noticed how stressed and anxious kids are?  And how it usually isn't even about stuff they need to think about--let alone worry about?

One of the many "extras" that we need in our classrooms is self soothing and calming strategies.  One of the best I know is different types of yogic breathing.  {I don't usually call it this, but my students do--those little smarties!}  I usually say "Deep Breathing" or "Relaxing Breath" or "Calming Breath."
I talk about times and ways they can use this breath.  I also talk about my own experiences of feeling so nervous it feels like there is a rock in my stomach.  Or when I feel so worried I can't sleep.  Or when I'm so angry I feel like I'm shaking on the inside.  {Kids really get this!}  I also tell them that the breathing only works for me because I've practice it so much, that it is almost automatic in a really stressful situation.

I ask them if they want to practice with me.  We usually practice when we come in from recess before a restroom break for just a couple minutes.  Sometimes we practice before we take a test.  Sometimes if we're antsy we will practice, too!

Here are a few of my favorites:

Hint:  We always breathe in and out through our noses.  If kids use their mouth I don't make a big deal about it, unless they sound like they are gasping for air.

Big Balloon Belly Breath:  We fill our bellies full of air, so they puff out like a balloon.  We hold for a few seconds.  Then as we exhale we try to remove all the air like a deflating balloon.  It helps to imagine we are squeezing our belly button back toward our spine.  {Repeat several times}

Smell the Flower, Blow Out the Candle:  My son prefers smell the cookie, blow out the candle!  I've heard several variations on this.  Hold up the index finger that will act as both flower and candle.  Breathe in smelling the flower and breathe out through mouth as if blowing out a candle.  Kids love these and it really works.

Breathe at your Happy Place:  Child closes their eyes and think of a place they love to be--real or imagined.  I suggest grandma's house or their backyard or a place they have visited.  I tell them I'm on a sandy beach in a hammock in the shade.  I can see it, but I've never been there.  We just breathe.  It's crazy how fast my class will become completely still.

If You Can Hear My Voice:  If it's loud I will start in a quiet voice, "If you can hear my voice breathe in through your noise and out through your nose.  If you can hear my voice fill your belly like a balloon.  If you can hear my voice release all the air through your nose."  And so on.

Audible Sigh:  We will inhale and then vocalize our exhale as a sigh.

Should Lift with Breath:  We inhale our shoulders up by our ears, and as we exhale we slowly lower our shoulders.  This takes practice.

These are great for grown ups and for kids at home, too!  It's amazing how the more they are practiced the more students will request them.

Happy Breathing!

What You Do Around The Edges

I just saw this quote again on someone's FB page, and I was reminded of two things.  First, I love and believe this quote on a profound level.  Second, this quote is being manifest in my life--all around the edges.

Sometimes I get lost/stuck in the reality that school does not work the way I believe it should or want it to be.  At times I am consumed by that.

At those times I'm not able to look out into the periphery--where some really rich stuff abounds.

This weekend the stuff around the edges came into focus, and it was rich and beautiful.

I had two noteworthy experiences:

1.  My art was accepted into my first every juried art show!

Here's a piece of my little painting.  I can't wait to see the exhibit!  You can find out more about it HERE.

2.  I took a leap and started a little gentle yoga class at my house on Sunday evening.  There's always that feeling of doubt that anyone will even show up, but there were 9 yogis packed into my living room and dining room.  It was amazing and a treat to spend the time with such incredible women.
If you might like to join us, email me, for details!

As I reflect, it just seems perfect to say, "Let the beauty you love be what you do!"  (Rumi)

That's just resonating in the deepest heart center of who I am this evening.

What's resonating with you right now?

Super Gentle Yoga Coming To My House

I have a special invitation I want to extend to all women who live within driving distance of my house.

I'm starting a super gentle yoga class at my house on Sunday evenings, 6 -7 p.m., beginning March 3.

Just Breathing, Stretching, and Relaxing.

A One Hour Sabbath of Self Care.

I would be so honored if you would join me.  We are going to practicing treating ourselves with tender loving kindness.  I think it's going to be extraordinary.  Email me if you need more info.

In November I started a yoga teacher training program.  We are half way in, and I am truly being transformed by the experience.  I'm being stretched and healed--physically, emotionally, and spiritually.  I want to share the bliss!  {There is no charge, as I am still in training.}
